What are debt counsellor processes?
In order to secure the legality of the debt review process and protect the rights of the consumer, certain steps must be followed.
- The counsellor assesses the consumer’s financial statements and recommends either a process of debt review or that the consumer seek an alternative solution.
- They then compile a repayment proposal, based on the consumer’s reviewed finances, that will be sent all creditors.
- The debt counsellor then has 60 days to file all the necessary paperwork, as well as implement the payment plan via a payment distribution agency.
- Once all debts have been paid, the consumer is given a debt clearance certificate.
